Youth Services Librarian

Position Description

The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for coordinating the daily operations of the Children’s Department. This includes maintaining the children’s and young adult collections, assisting patrons in finding appropriate materials, and developing and conducting programs that promote literacy and lifelong learning. The position also provides general library service and support in the Makerspace and elsewhere in the library as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a relevant and up-to-date collection of print, audiovisual, and other physical items for circulation.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct a variety of children’s and teen programs that encourage literacy, creativity, skill development, and learning.
  • In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, Makerspace Librarian, and other staff, plan and execute a variety of family-oriented programs.
  • Assist children, teens and caregivers in selecting and locating appropriate library materials.
  • Create reading lists and other resource guides for library patrons.
  • Maintain relationships with local schools, childcare facilities, and other local organizations in order to promote and expand library services.
  • Provide general library assistance and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program OR Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in library science, education, or related field and two years of experience working in a library or educational setting OR Some college and four years of experience working directly with youth in a library setting. Recent library school graduates and current students encouraged to apply.
  • Experience working with children and families strongly preferred.
  • Ability to independently develop and deliver engaging storytimes and programs suited to patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to anticipate and meet patron needs.
  • Current knowledge of children's and young adult literature, media, and related resources.
  • Proficiency in basic computer operations and the effective use of online resources and digital tools.

Position Details

  • Reports To: Library Director
  • Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, including one evening per week and one Saturday per month.
  • Salary: $38,000/year
  • Anticipated start date: January 4, 2027
